Gateshead athletes were on the podium last weekend at the Northern Championships. Day 1 started brightly with Joe Halpin taking gold in the U17M Hurdles with Oliver Herring in the silver position. In the U20 age group Oliver Wellings took gold in a new PB time and Miles McGrady joined him on the podium in bronze medal position, a tight hamstring meant that Jason Nicholson who won his heat didn’t make the start line for the final. Good performances in the hurdles were also seen from Lucy Turner, Tom Craig, Sam Bradley, Emma Scarborough and Lily Pearce.

In the women’s sprints Jazmine Moss had a good 2 days with a 4th place in the final of the 60m and 5th in the final of the 200m. Plamedi Mukendi was one place behind in the 60m in 5th position. Ashlyn Bland and Jenny Gilmour were 4th and 5th respectively in the U20 400m. Rosie Findlay was also a finalist with 6th place in the U20 final. Steph Addison in her first run as a Senior was 6th in the 200m final and had a good run in the semi final of the 60m against good quality competition. Good performances as well from Beth Pringle, Sydney Robertson, Emma Gilmour and Macey Bradshaw. Emily Stewart (T38) ran with the U20 women to post a good performance in the 60m.

Fewer Gateshead Men sprinters made the trip to Sheffield, however Will Curtis maintained his 2015 form and took the gold medal in the U17 Men 400m and Julian Osie-Bonsu progressed through to the semi finals of the 60m. Joseph Gray (T46) ran close to his pb in the U2 men’s sprints.

In the longer distances both Tom Marper and Elisah Tait ran good races in the 800m against very strong competition.

Meanwhile some good performances in the jumps saw medals for Emily Gargan – silver in the U20 Women Triple Jump, Hannah Pringle – bronze in the Senior Women Triple Jump, Lucy Turner – silver in the Senior Women Long Jump and Scott Hall – bronze in the Senior Men Long Jump. Amelia Bateman took home a silver medal in the U17 High Jump. Athletes just outside the medals were Harrison Whitfield (4th in the U17 Triple Jump) and Samuel Bradley (5th in the U17 Triple Jump), Oliver Herring (4th in the U17 Long Jump) and Joe Halpin (5th in the U17 Long Jump. Emma Scarborough, Joseph Gray, Emily Stewart, Carla McMullen and Lily Pearce also competed in the jumps.

Fewer throwers made the trip, however Sophie Littlemore, in her first year as a Senior was 5th in the Shot Putt and Emily Stewart (T38) threw a PB in her event.
